Emir Abdelkader was once again defeated by French forces in 1840 and took refuge in Morocco, seeking to recruit new troops. Finally, in 1847, the French arrested him and deported him to France and from there to Damascus, where he died in 1883. With the capture of Emir Abdelkader, the whole of Algeria was occupied by the French.
